GENERAL INFORMATION
What Should I Expect During a Black Rocket
Fishing Adventure?
Our charters are open boats and this experience is NOT for the unadventurous.
This is a “hardy” adventure and should not be taken lightly.
Cruising speed is between 25-50mph depending on ocean conditions and customer
comfort. We are an un-inspected commercial vessel, insured and licensed
by the State of Oregon Marine Board and California Department of Boating
and Waterways. We reserve the sole right to determine your fitness and
stamina for ANY of our offshore operations. This trip is not recommended
for pregnant women, the elderly, those with chronic back or neck problems
or those who have had neck or back surgery or people with heart conditions.
What
Port Does the Black Rocket Depart From?
The Black Rocket is mobile and we use the ports of Newport, Depoe Bay,
Tillamook, Netarts Bay, and Nehalem Bay. Capt. KUJO will confirm departure
location 48 hours prior to departure via email or telephone.
Depoe
Bay
Go East at the Shell station at the South end of town. Proceed down the
hill to the boat ramp—look for the Black Rocket.
Tillamook
Go to Garibaldi, turn East at the Texaco station to the launch ramp—look
for the Black Rocket
Netarts Bay
Follow signs to boat ramp in Netarts Bay---there is only one boat ramp.
Nehalem Bay
Go to boat ramp at Nehalem Bay state park.
Newport
When you come over the bridge into Newport, take an immediate
right after you pass over the bridge. You will loop around and will see
South Beach on the left side next to the Rogue Ale Brewery. You should see
the Black Rocket in the water. Park in the lot on the side by Rogue Ale
Brewery. Look for the red truck with the Black Rocket Charter logo’s
on the canopy. For more information about Newport, including lodging information,
you can visit their website at www.discovernewport.com.
What is the Time Schedule for the Trip?
Please arrive at the designated location at 5:15am. The Black Rocket will
leave the fishing grounds for port by 2pm.
What
Do I Need to Bring?
Your lunch, some water, sun block, sunglasses (optional), seasick medicine,
some very warm socks, and (VERY IMPORTANT), don’t forget your FISHING
LICENSE AND HALIBUT/SALMON TAG! Also bring the desire to have a great
time and a sense of adventure…leave the rest up to us!
What
Will You Provide?
We will have a waterproof container for your lunch if necessary. We provide
all the fishing gear and fishing bait, but you are always welcome to bring
your own pole and favorite lure.
How
Should I Dress?
We will provide each person with a complete set of RockitWear. (dry suit,
thermal undergarment, and thermal hood). You should avoid wearing any
cotton clothing--a pair of swimming trunks for the guys is appropriate.
Also, bring a warm pair of socks.
Do
You Offer Cleaning Service?
No. We do not provide cleaning service. Your fish will be stored in iced
coolers until we return to the docks. Many of the docks provide cleaning
service.
TUNA
When Are Tuna Available?
Tuna are warm water fish. When temperatures reach 59-62 degrees we will
be hunting for tuna!
Tuna fishing generally starts around late July and goes through September.
How
Many Tuna Can I Catch?
The Oregon recreational fin fish limit is twenty-five per day. This is
all fish caught in 24 hours be it salmon, rockfish, halibut, tuna, stripers,
etc. In a twelve hour trip, it would be hard to catch that many tuna.
From figures published by the PFMC, the average catch for tuna is about
two fish per recreational angler per trip.
HALIBUT
When is Halibut Available?
The spring season usually is set to occur on two weekends in May with
any leftover fish for a June fishery. In August the leftover quota (if
there is any) is rolled over to the summer quota. Some years there are
enough quotas to fish for halibut until October. Oregon Fish & Wildlife
will not determine the official season until March 2004.
What Is The Limit On Halibut?
Currently the limit on halibut is one per day with a total of six per
season. The minimum size is 32". In the 2004 halibut season we caught
halibut to 120 lbs. On most trips we were able to land a fish over 50
lbs. As we only carry five passengers we were able to get limits for our
passengers on most trips in 2004.
SALMON
When is Salmon Available?
The salmon season will be set in April by the Pacific Fishery Management
Council. The season traditionally runs from April through December.
What
Is The Limit On Salmon?
The current limit is 2 adult salmon per day and
20 per season.
“THE TRI-FECTA”
When is the best time to go for a “tri-fecta”?
The best time for a “tri-fecta” is August/September depending
on the seasons set by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. For Tuna,
the water temperatures must be between 59-62 degrees and Halibut and Salmon
must be open as designated by the ORFW. We cannot guarantee fishing for
all species, but if the conditions permit, you can be sure Captain KUJO
will go for it!
